French Toast
Ingredients
- 2 thick slices bread
- 1 egg
- 3 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp sugar
- ¼ tsp vanilla extract (optional)
- ¼ tsp cinnamon (optional)
- Pinch of salt
- Butter for the griller plates
- Honey, jam, or powdered sugar to serve
Steps
- 1
Make the egg mixture
Whisk egg, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt in a shallow bowl wide enough to fit the bread.
- 2
Soak the bread
Place bread slices in the egg mixture. Let soak for 30 seconds per side — the bread should absorb the custard but not become so wet it falls apart.
- 3
Preheat and butter the griller
Preheat the sandwich griller for 3–4 minutes. Brush the plates lightly with butter — this is what creates the golden crust.
- 4
Grill
Place the soaked bread on the lower plate. Close the griller gently. Cook for 4–5 minutes until both sides are golden brown.
- 5
Serve
Remove and serve immediately with honey, jam, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit.
Tips for Best Results
💡 Thick bread works best
Thin bread soaks through too quickly and becomes mushy. Use 2 cm thick slices for the best custardy interior.
💡 Do not over-soak
Bread soaked for too long becomes structurally weak and sticks to the griller. Thirty seconds per side is enough.
💡 Butter the plates, not just the bread
Butter applied to the hot griller plates immediately begins browning and creates a true golden crust. Butter on the bread alone does not give the same result.

Better Than the Pan Version
French toast on a gas stove requires flipping — and flipping is where things go wrong. You have one perfectly golden side and then the second side either overcooks while you are distracted, or never gets as golden because the pan has cooled.
A sandwich griller removes flipping entirely. Both sides cook against heated plates simultaneously. The result is uniformly golden all over, with a slightly crisp exterior and a custardy interior — the ideal French toast texture.
