Oats Porridge
Ingredients
- ½ cup instant rolled oats (not steel-cut)
- 1 cup boiling water or hot milk
- Pinch of salt
- Toppings: banana slices, honey, chopped nuts, dried fruit, cinnamon
Steps
- 1
Place oats in a bowl
Add the oats to a deep bowl. Add a pinch of salt.
- 2
Boil water or milk
Boil water in your electric kettle. For a creamier porridge, heat milk in a separate container (microwave or another small kettle) and use that instead of or alongside water.
- 3
Pour and cover
Pour boiling liquid over the oats — just enough to cover them by about 1 cm. Cover the bowl with a plate immediately.
- 4
Wait 3 minutes
Leave covered for 3 minutes. The oats will absorb the liquid and soften completely.
- 5
Stir and top
Stir well. The porridge should be creamy and smooth. If too thick, add a splash more hot water. Top with banana, honey, nuts, or cinnamon and serve.
Tips for Best Results
💡 Use rolled oats, not steel-cut
Steel-cut oats need 20–30 minutes of simmering and will not work with this method. Stick to instant or quick-cook rolled oats.
💡 Milk makes it creamier
Substituting some or all water with hot milk produces a much creamier, richer porridge.
💡 Add toppings after, not before
Fruit and nuts should be added after the oats are cooked — adding them before can water down the porridge or make the nuts soggy.
💡 Add nut butter for protein
A tablespoon of peanut butter or almond butter stirred into warm porridge boosts protein and keeps you full for much longer.
