Grilled Sandwich
Ingredients
- 2 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
- 2 slices processed cheese or 3 tbsp grated cheese
- 4–5 slices cucumber
- 4–5 slices tomato
- Salt and black pepper
- 1 tsp green chutney (optional)
- ½ tsp chaat masala (optional)
Steps
- 1
Prepare the bread
Butter both slices of bread on one side each. Place butter-side down on a plate.

On one slice (non-butter side), spread green chutney if using. Layer cucumber, tomato, season with salt, pepper, and chaat masala. Add cheese on top.

Close the sandwich
Place the second bread slice on top, butter-side up.
- 4
Air fry
Place the sandwich in the air fryer basket at 180 °C for 6–8 minutes. After 4 minutes, carefully flip the sandwich and cook for another 3–4 minutes until both sides are golden and the cheese has melted.
- 5
Serve hot
Cut diagonally and serve immediately with ketchup or chutney.
Tips for Best Results
💡 Butter all the way to the edges
Bread edges that are not buttered will dry out and not brown. Spread butter all the way to the crust for even toasting.
💡 Use day-old bread
Fresh bread can become soggy if the filling is wet. Day-old bread is slightly drier and toasts better.
💡 No need to preheat for sandwiches
Unlike other air fryer recipes, preheating is optional for sandwiches. You can place the sandwich in a cold air fryer and it will still toast evenly.

Your Air Fryer Is Better Than a Sandwich Maker
Most Indian households either use a gas stove with a tawa for grilled sandwiches, or a dedicated electric sandwich maker. But there is a better option: the air fryer.
The air fryer circulates hot air around the sandwich on all sides simultaneously, producing a sandwich that is crispy all over — not just on the bottom where a tawa touches it, and not just on the flat pressed surface of a sandwich maker. Think of it as a mini convection oven that specialises in toasting.
